While driving around Vermont about five years ago I discovered The Clock Shop and its friendly owner Dave Welch in the city of Vergennes (pop. 2,588). Dave proved to be a fascinating character eager to talk about his work and to conduct a guided tour of his wonderfully chaotic shop. I asked if he would object to my returning the next day with a camera operator to make a short film about him and he happily agreed.
This was the first time I directed anything in about 15 years and it shows. Every rookie mistake that could be made I made: no research, no script, no shot list and no prepared questions.
When editing started I had no idea of what I wanted to achieve. The image quality is far below what is obtainable today. Despite my mistakes, I think Dave’s warmth and good nature are readily evident. As for me, I will do better next time and there will be a next time.
